Part, a big part, of living well is learning to love the skin we’re in. But being at war with our bodies is all-too-common for so many women. I know. I was at war with my curves for most of my life. But guess what? Not anymore.
For years I’ve covered women’s issues and written about style for real women, with real bodies and real budgets in print and electronic publications ranging from glossy women’s magazines to MSNBC, the New York Times and now here on NeverSayDiet.com.
I’ve always been a writer and I’ve always been a full figured woman. In the 1990s I felt so frustrated with plus size fashion that I created a clothing line called Cello to deliver my own take on casual European elegance to women regardless of size. Because, I’m not kidding, it’s just easier to navigate life when you like what you’re wearing.
Over the years I’ve been a lot larger and a lot smaller than I am today. I know without question that with a little ingenuity and resourcefulness, you can get dressed and thrive at any size. Most of the time my self-esteem is better today at a size 18 than it was when I wore either a size 12 or a size 28. Beyond the real matter of health, it’s all in your head.
Getting here has been a process for me and maybe it’s challenging for you too. Like so many of us, I’ve been on this journey toward empowered self-acceptance for years. Yeah, life’s a work in progress. But I’ve learned a thing or two along the way. And the more I’ve learned the more I’ve wanted to share with you.
We all know that loving our physical selves is no small challenge. There’s so much pressure out there to be at war with who we are. If you’d told me years ago that I’d be leading conversations on body image and style as The Curvy Counselor on the TODAY show and Fox News, I’d have said you were nuts. I literally could not have imagined this life.
Whether here on iVillage or out there in the press, The Curvy Counselor speaks to and for the 62 percent of women who don’t fit the prevailing size 0-12 fashion mold but still want to get dressed and thrive in their lives. When I say EVERY body, that includes yours (the one you’re in, right now, exactly as you are, really).
