Jean Mutation: How to Style Pastel Jeans for Curvy DNA!

Apr 28, 2009

When the great and all powerful gods of fashion decide every season what is in style, they never consider anyone more than a size 0 and less than 6 feet tall, especially when it comes to jeans.

Take the recent fad of “The Skinny Jean” which every other plus size gal that comes into my store asks for. Now ladies are you ready for the latest trend? PASTEL JEANS!!! Are you out of your mind?! Orrrrrrr, can we make it work?

If you are a true clothes horse, don’t you want to wear the latest styles like everyone else? I have some suggestions on how to style these pastel jeans for the plus size gal.

There is a simple fix to the pastel peril…THE RIGHT TOP!   First and most important is the length of your top. Wearing a tunic length top cuts the amount of the jean so you are not just wearing a full lightly colored jean from the waist down. By wearing a tunic length top you’ll cut the jean (and the color) in half! Showing only from the lower thigh down will create a slimming look with a pop of color and trend! Make sure the tunic top has some shape and it is not boxy. The top should a-line from your hip and not your armpit.

Since you are using a solid light bottom go for a great print on top. I know you are seeing solid tops and bottoms on the celebrities in the fashion magazines, but for our shapes mixing in a print would give you a better silhouette and balance.

If the pastel jean is a little too Brady Bunch for you or you are afraid of color, try a white jean to keep with the theme of a  light bottom and still look on trend, it is classic and timeless.

My personal choice for a pastel jean is Svoboda Premium Jeans! They have the best fit for plus size. They carry regular and tall length from sizes 10-24 and are priced under one hundred dollars which is great for premium denim. You will be in style, on trend and look fabulous! My favorite is the light blue shade called “blue ice”.

Don’t you want to try a “blue ice” jean so you will look really cool on your next hot date?

Now this is coming from a guy...of course, this is just my opinion. But I am not a fan of the colored jeans. Neither am I a fan of the pastel style. To me, it's just poor fashion. But if you like it, then go ahead and try it. I am not usually observant, but I probably came across some women that wore colored jeans while looking beautiful and sexy and I never bothered with the fact that I hate color jeans.

So I am pretty sure that's the case with most guys out there.

I am all for a cool colored jean, but I can't fathom paying more than $20-$30 for jean, no matter what color.

I LOVE straight leg jeans.  I know many people think they make you look bigger, but I disagree with that.  Thanks for the heads up on the color choices beyond the blues, Lisa.

I can't picture the a-line from the hip tunic top....

I am really tired of the empire waist maternity looking top I tell you...

So this sounds like an interesting alternative.

I'm going to google the pants. Thanks for the tips.
