Try taking a look at your habits. are you "grazing" while you're on the phone or watching TV? Are you drinking enough water??. Try not eating after 7:00 pm at night. Try using smaller plates for portion control. Sometime bad habits derail us even when we are making the right steps in our seiting plan. Good luck.

My boyfriend was complaining about his weight, so someone suggested he start drinking diet soda and he still gained.  After watching for a while, I realized his problem was what and how much he was eating.  I helped him lose 30lbs in about 4 months just by changing what he ate and how much he ate in a sitting.  Unfortunately, in 4 years, I haven't been able to break him of sitting down with a bag of chips, so he still goes up and down.  Take a good look at what and how much you're eating.  It may even help to have someone else look at it.  Swap your snacks for healthier snacks, stick with low fat, reduced carb meals.  Eat a salad before dinner (vinaigrette, or low-fat dressing) and eat smaller portions at meal-time.  If the snack you want comes in a bag, put some on a plate and don't go back for more.  Pay attention to how hungry you actually feel... sometimes, just a glass of juice or an apple will do the trick.

Unless you're allergic, or have been specifically not not to, use more garlic (fresh or pre-minced) in as many dishes as possible, and use extra virgin olive oil to saute.  Garlic helps cleanse the blood and evoo has many benfits.

As for "no chicken, no fish, no potatoes":  I agree with a previous response, talk to your doc again.  It's usually way they are prepared that needs to be changed.  Certain fish are usually recommended because of their "good" cholesterol levels.

There is a lot of info, including diet plans at cholesterol.about.com
