Midnight Muncher

Sometimes we think we are hungry and need a snack when we are really just dehydrated. Before I snack at night, I first have a big glass of water or some decaf green tea. This usually leaves my stomach feeling full, and I ignore my craving to snack. In my opinion, cravings at night are the hardest to curb. Even if we have been good all day long, it's hardest to resist that late night snack. It's easier to just give in to the temptation of chocolate or sweets after a long day at work. But this is the time that it's most important to be good. When we give in to these cravings, we tend to go overboard and load on the calories at night.

I have a terrible problem with midnight snacking, so I've made a deal with myself: If (when!) the cravings hit,
First: I try just drinking water - 12-16 oz. If that doesn't do the trick,
Second: I allow myself one generous cup of low-cal hot cocoa -- you can buy it pre-mixed or mix up a batch yourself to have on hand (I use high quality dark cocoa, Novella non-fat sweetener, and nonfat dry milk, for a really rich taste) -- a yummy comfort drink that nets about 25 calories.
And if THAT doesn't work,
Third: One small or medium apple (the Fuji variety is wonderfully sweet, juicy & crunchy), with the skin, sliced and then cut into about 25 pieces, sprinkled with cinnamon, eaten slowly, one piece at a time. This is about 60 calories, and it totally does the trick.

Sometimes I woke up during the night and felt hungry. I took a glass of milk with 2 small bars of sesame mixed with several grains and with low sugar and low carbohydrate. It's OK to fill my stomach and I could go back to a good sleep till morning. I do 20-30 minutes exercise every morning. I did not gain weight.

I devide my meals into 6 mini meals a day. 300 for each main meal and 100 for each snack. This is the only thing that keeps me full so I don't snack any later than 8pm.
