Spinning to Smile

Haily Cohen
Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

My favorite class at the gym is spinning. If you had asked me a few years ago to try spinning, I would have laughed at the mere thought of participating in such a strenuous activity. This past year I was forced to lose weight due to medical reasons. I decided that I had no other option other than to push myself physically and drastically change my diet. My first spinning class was at 7:30 am, which was a feat in itself. But I made it there on time with my eyes barely open. The instructor began the class by describing various settings where we could imagine ourselves riding. At first, I was unable to lose myself in the imaginary scenery. After my blood starting flowing and the music was pumping, I became addicted. I felt great after the class and for the rest of the day. Spinning at 7:30am became a habit of mine and helped me regain my health.

I love Spinning.  Between the beat of the music, the instructor, my heart rate monitor and my own competiveness.  I'm competing against myself, no one else.  Ii just love it.  By the time the class is finished  I have puched myself to the limit , I'm soaked from sweating.  I even changed the pedals on my outdoor bike to clip on pedals to get the whole leg workout experience. And I have a bad knee and spinning works for me!

What is it? Spinning is an aerobic exercise that takes place on a specially designed stationary bicycle called (obviously enough) a spinning bike. As you pedal, motivating music plays and the instructor talks you through a visualization of an outdoor cycling workout: "You're going up a long hill now, you can't see the top yet.…" During the class you vary your pace -- sometimes pedaling as fast as you can, other times cranking up the tension and pedaling slowly from a standing position. This helps you to focus inwardly and work on your mind as well as your body.
